Charlotte could see its first significant snowfall in over 1,076 days, with the last major snow recorded in January 2022. While some snowflakes fell on Dec. 3, the upcoming system has the potential to bring more than just a light dusting.

Winter weather is expected to arrive Friday afternoon, moving west to east and lasting for 12-16 hours across the greater Charlotte area. Meteorologists predict the storm will start as snow before transitioning to a mix of rain, snow, and sleet by Friday evening. The system is expected to clear out before sunrise Saturday, leaving behind sunshine for the weekend.

Snowfall totals for Charlotte are forecasted to reach around one to two inches, with areas south and east of I-85 likely seeing only a slushy inch. Warmer air aloft could also bring up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation in some locations.

“Likely a wintry mix/snow arrives late afternoon/evening. Light snow falls in the early evening. An eventual shift to freezing rain/sleet moves in mid to late evening. All precipitation clears early morning. Between midnight to sunrise. The Mountains have ongoing light snow/flurries for most of the day.”
