Hundreds of flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport have been canceled as a winter storm approaches the region.

According to FlightAware data from Jan. 10, over 700 flights had been canceled, with more than 90 delays recorded. The majority of cancellations affected American Airlines, which operates a hub at the airport, though several other airlines also reported disruptions.

Airport officials have assured travelers that operations remain fully staffed, with a dedicated snow team ready to manage winter weather conditions.

Earlier this week officials said the airport would “remain open and operational, no matter the conditions.” They also said the airport has a dedicated fleet of nearly 40 snow removal and de-icing vehicles should they be needed. Parking decks have been pretreated to help prevent icing.

Ahead of the storm, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency, warning residents about freezing temperatures and hazardous travel conditions.

This storm could bring Charlotte’s first measurable snowfall in three years, marking a significant winter weather event for the area.

Winter weather is expected to arrive Friday afternoon, moving west to east and lasting for 12-16 hours across the greater Charlotte area. Meteorologists predict the storm will start as snow before transitioning to a mix of rain, snow, and sleet by Friday evening. The system is expected to clear out before sunrise Saturday, leaving behind sunshine for the weekend.
